ICANN visits Russia to raise awareness of gTLDs

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been working to raise awareness of the incoming generic top level domain name (gTLD) regime in Russia.

Internet companies, government, web users and Russian media representatives met with ICANN delegates in Moscow at the .ru ccTLD Coordination Center.

The event was designed to provide more information about gTLDs and the potential benefits customized domain names could have for Russian companies and organizations.

ICANN president and chief executive Rod Beckstrom; director George Sadowsky, chief of staff Christopher Mondini and regional representative Veni Markovski were all on-hand to offer further insight into gTLDs.

From January 12th, businesses around the world will be able to apply for their own personalized domain names, subject to the payment of a $185,000 registration fee with ICANN.

“ICANN’s visit to Moscow is an important sign that it recognizes the importance of Russia in the global discussion of how to improve ICANN’s model,” said Mr. Markovski.

The next gTLD awareness-raising event will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia, as ICANN seeks global participation in the upcoming program.
