It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data.

This is a quote from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic character Sherlock Holmes. It would be so easy for us all to take certain data as reliable, and then begin down the road to theorizing, and then make critical decisions based on that……and then, “oops!!” !! How did that happen!!

How many times in a day do we take data that is presented to us as fact, and without validation, we we make decisions? We believe our senses, our banks, the government, polls, statistics, economists, and others without question – mostly because we would never have the resources to cross check or challenge their findings. Benjamin Spock said “Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.”

So how does this relate to domains, you ask? – it’s simple; domains are not real, you cannot touch them, hold them, squirrel them away in the sock drawer or stuff them in your mattress. – they are a virtual asset – you have to “trust” that the registrar will hold the “data” properly so you can make the right decisions and access your assets when you need to. You never really “own” a domain, you are only leasing it. As long as you pay for the renewals, it’s yours to use. Forget to pay the renewals, then someone else has a chance to use it.

As of a 07-15-2010’s posting on WHOIS.sc, there are almost 121 million domains in the com/net/org/info/biz/us extensions. How many of these are yours? Despite the assertion that all the good domains are gone, and it’s true to a point, but yet almost 125,000 new GTLD domains are getting registered every day.

Each one of these domains could be mission critical to your business. Maybe it’s a new ad campaign, or the “next best thing” product launch, or just a way to share family photos to your Aunt and Uncle in Phoenix and Grandma in Alaska.

Selecting a domain registrar seems easy, but it’s deeper than that, and more than just getting a good deal on price. Ask questions and validate for yourself whether or not you can trust them to get it done for you. CSC manages the online presence for some of the world’s largest brands. We specialize in working with corporations. We also and we have the tools to make sense of and properly analyze the data so you can trust that the decisions you make were are based on solid information. We are indeed, more than just a registrar; we are a trusted advisor to our clients – but don’t take my word for it – see what others have said!.
