Ski resort accepts fault over cybersquatting

The operators of a New Zealand ski resort have apologized for registering domain names related to rival operators, it has been reported.

Snow Park shareholder Sean Synnott told the Southland Times that his firm had registered a number of domain names unrelated to the company.

The firm held the legal rights to domain names including nzski.co, coronetpeak.co, treblecone.co and cardrona.co, all of which redirected customers to the Snow Park website.

Mr. Synnott accepted that the move was “potentially naive” and could be interpreted as cybersquatting. He said the firm had now stopped using the domain names, adding that there had been nothing underhanded about his company’s actions in the domain name market.

“There was nothing sinister about it,” Mr. Synnott told the news provider.

He explained that Snow Park had been invited to bid for the available .co domain names through an auction process last year.
