Twitter assumes control of ‘tweet’ trademark

Twitter has finally secured the trademark to the term ‘tweet,’ it has been reported.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the micro-blogging service is set to gain control of the mark from the current holder Twittad.

Twittad’s chief executive, James Eliason, told the news provider he would transfer the ‘tweet’ trademark to Twitter, provided that legal action against him is dropped.

Twitter spokesperson Lynn Fox confirmed the reports, saying that a resolution had been reached with Twittad.

“[This] recognizes consistent use of Tweet while supporting the continued success of Twitter ecosystem partners like Twittad,” she stated.

Ms. Fox declined to comment on whether Twitter had paid a fee for the trademark.

Twitter launched an attempt to register ‘tweet’ with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in April 2009; however, this was twice suspended.
